Alcohol and Lupus
To drink or not to drink? Before being diagnosed with lupus I loved having a night out with my girls indulging in cocktails and having a few laughs. After my diagnosis I still enjoy a night out but I've changed my alcohol intake do to the disease. I usually drink a glass or two of wine now. Every now and than I may have a dirty martini but I limit myself to one. My alcohol intake depends on what medication I am taking. Most lupus medication you are not suppose to consume alcohol while taking it ( It is not recommended to consume alcohol with any medication). What do you think about alcohol and lupus?

ReplyDeleteSince the liver is responsible for metabolizing drugs and other chemicals besides alcohol, so depending on the person, dangerous alcohol-drug interactions can occur in light/social drinkers as well as heavier drinkers. If you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, ask your doctor for advice about alcohol intake. Recognize that even herbal medicines and supplements can have adverse interactions with alcohol. Remember, too, as much as we try to block out this fact: alcohol, when broken down in medical terms and how it influences the body, is a depressant. That is another thing that must be kept in mind, especially if any anxiety/stress drugs are taken...
With everything, you must use moderation!!! You know your own body better than anyone else, so use your self-knowledge along with professional advice to determine what is best for you.
I am glad you put this question out there, because many people are guilty of the "other people do it and they are fine" syndrome. Everyone's body is different, and what works for one may not work for the next.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Abbi. I think you are wise to limit your alcohol intake but definitely consider what meds are being taken at the time, as well. Great question!!

Moderation is definitely the key regardless of your condition. There are few absolutes in life but you can never go wrong with LESS alchohol consumption.
